Gone, Baby, Gone

Here’s what happened to the love scene I revised last week. I deleted it. Yep. The Whole Thing. Why would I write a love scene when I really don’t like reading them? As Jenny Crusie would say, if you’re not having fun, the reader likely isn’t, either.

What I did instead is write the scenes before and after. To me, those are way more interesting. The scene before is about how desire builds and makes you forget to be rational. The scene after is about some consequences Eve has to suffer as a result of spending the night with her new boyfriend.

I have to say this about the revision: it’s scary how crappy that last draft was. Scary. Two years of work and so much of it was stinky bad. But I’m fixing it now. Really. Or I will be after I bake cookies and wrap presents and do more gift shopping and finish collapsing after three parties in a row.
