This morning, after having thought a lot about why my Blessings essay wasn’t quite what I wanted it to be, I figured I’d take another look and run through another revision. Even before I started, I thought, “If I can’t figure out what words will fix it, I’ll at least read it.”
So I read. And I tried to fix. It IS better than it was, but as I took my breakfast break, I realized, the reason this piece is not coming together is because it’s the wrong story for this venue. I was trying to write about joint custody as a blessing and it just didn’t work. Maybe my wounds around that part of my life are still too raw. Maybe I didn’t like putting a big, complicated story into 500 words. Whatever the reason, I knew in my gut the piece is not working, so I’m filing it away, perhaps for a future project that will give the subject its due.
Meanwhile, I had to do something positive so I listed my book with Jexbo. A week or so ago, I asked my husband to give me any ideas he had for improving my work life, writing or teaching. The next day he brought home an article about Jexbo, a new online bookseller for self-published authors. It’s so new the owner had to make up a category for my book. Anyway, I got that listed and so count this as a productive workday despite the unBlessing.
