Dear John

I adore reading John Lacey’s blog. He’s trying to find his way into the memoir he wants to write, and for me, that makes compelling reading. Plus he makes videos!  So you can hear his Aussie accent. His post about trying NaNoWriMo is incredibly moving and honest.

He’s inspired me to try to be just as honest about my own motives for jumping into NaNo this year. The biggest reason I decided to do it was timing. It’s perfect. I really want to write about the  reccesion. It’s been an obsession with me for a year now. Might as well write about it.

Until this morning, I didn’t realize that I want this recession novel to be a romantic comedy. I know, a comedy about a tragedy. But I’d rather laugh than cry. That’s just me.

My novels usually have “romantic elements” but the romance is not the main story. This time, I’m going to see if I can write a funny light romance. A real one. I’ve never been able to do it before. It’s harder than I ever imagined.

So, I’m scared I’ll fail, but I’m doing it anyway. Now I have to run over to my page and change the genre from “mainstream” to “romance.” Thanks for making me really think about why I’m doing this, John.

I love the idea of a romantic comedy set within a recession when most people tend to lose their sense of humour… Good luck!

This is absolutely interesting… I can’t wait to see what comes out of it. Who knows – maybe you’ll find that while more challenging, it is more rewarding. Good Luck!
