Endings and New Beginnings

September is a full month for me but not as full as it used to be when I was a teacher. My family has four birthdays in September (and we are not all that big of a family!) I have a writer’s conference at the end of the month. My writing group meets, too, the week before the conference. Also I expect the final galley (just to read over to make for sure sure sure there are no mistakes) of my first historical novel. Yes, and I got the cover! This book is about ready to go. Publication November 2025.

I am also finishing my final book of the Jane in St Pete trilogy. And saying goodbye to murder mysteries! And contemporary fiction! So many endings but endings imply new beginnings. My editor recently asked if I was interesting in writing more historicals…and I said YES. That’s my new path forward, writing about the past, creating a world where things are so much less complicated than life in the 21st century and true love is what makes us and saves us. I did say it’s still fiction, right?

In truth, most women had a tough row to hoe back in 1800. What is different from the real historic world is that in romance fiction is there’s always a happy ending. But of course the characters have to suffer too. Just as all people from all walks of life and through the ages have all had to suffer. Some much more than others. I always say I did most of my suffering early in life and now things are mostly happy all the time. I love being retired from teaching. I love Florida. I love writing every day for as long as I want. I am joyful and secure in my relationship–oh our anniversary is in September too. 39 years! And it was hard, had its ups and downs, but now, poof, magical happiness.

Also this is my blog’s birthday month, too. Thank you to my 983 subscribers. <3

As another former teacher, September is always a thought-provoking month. Your future writing plans sound intriguing, Cynthia!

I was happy as a teacher until the last few years, Becky. There was always summer to write fiction. Now I am so glad I do not have to figure out is the writing on the term paper is A.I. or the student’s. I wake up every morning so happy to have escaped that!

I’ve been retired from teaching for 10 years but I still have that nightmare, you probably know the one. No not the showing up for class naked one or the one where you forget to go, but the unfocused anxiety one. I’d probably have the naked one but that kind of happened and the forgetting to go actually DID happen and reality dispels a lot of nightmares ( or is one! 🤣) I’ve written four works of historical fiction, but not romantic so endings tended to be on the equivocal side.

Oh! I have been wondering how I (a true romantic) could escape “romance” … I’ll look for your books!

Mine was always getting lost on the way to class or not having planned the lesson for the day.
